Dr. Esther Mayfield - A Ph.D. With Pizzaz and a Soft Spot in Her Heart for Animals

Dr. Mayfield, who received her master of science in electrical engineering (M.S.E.E.) at San Diego State University (SDSU) and her doctorate in engineering from the University of California at San Diego/California Western University, is tops in a field usually dominated by men. In fact, Dr. Mayfield is the first woman to receive an M.S.E.E. from SDSU! Dr. Mayfield has advised the U.S. Congress on technology issues, participated in the design and development of the Global Positioning Systems and holds several patents in the field of microwave technology.

On the animal front, Dr. Mayfield is particularly fond of native wildlife and lives on a canyon rim in La Jolla, where a bevy of critters – birds, mammals and reptiles – regularly provide a show better than reality TV. For example, raccoons often peer through her sliding glass door and skunks stop by for special treats.

Dr. Mayfield also believes in the mission of the Zoological Society. “The Zoo serves a tremendous purpose with its international and local conservation efforts,” she says. “Habitats all over the world are being decimated, so the Zoo’s efforts to protect animals and wildlands are incredibly important.”

To assist the Zoo in continuing its conservation legacy, Dr. Mayfield set up the Mayfield Charitable Trust. “I purchased a couple of apartment buildings in 1982, but because of management difficulties, I decided to sell them,” she said. “And, I would have had to raise money to pay taxes on the sale of the buildings, meaning, I would have ended up with nothing in the end.”

“Instead, I established the Mayfield Charitable Trust, and transferred the apartment buildings into the trust. As trustee, I then sold the properties and invested their proceeds into income-producing securities. This provides me with lifetime income and the remainder will go to several beneficiaries, including the Zoological Society. “Also, the charitable tax deduction was great! I used it to offset the gains I had realized from the sale of another property and some stocks.”

Dr. Mayfield is a true friend of the Zoological Society and a genuine friend of the animals. Because of benevolent people like Dr. Mayfield, the ray of hope in our race against extinction shines brighter.
